World War One claimed more than 9 million soldiers, 10 million civilians, and 21 million were wounded. The war was a major force behind all of these deaths, However, influenza swept across the globe and in the war conditions it claimed 50 million of its own. Some of the men who returned home form the war were not as lucky as others. An entire generation was left maimed and disfigured by artillery, shrapnel and mines. Many men lost their arms and legs in battle and were amputated.Because so many men had been injured permanently it helped lead to scientific advances. 240,000 amputee soldiers helped lead new developments in prosthetic's; before this time prosthetic limbs were custom made and were very uncomfortable. Other men suffered from a much more serious condition, severe post traumatic stress disorder. "Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a type of anxiety disorder. It can occur after you have gone through an extreme emotional trauma that involved the threat of injury or death"(Board). This disorder became too severe for some of the men to handle and they were hospitalized for the rest of their lives. This war harmed not only the soldiers but also civilians in many ways.
